Zoo Atlanta Tiger is Expecting!

Chelsea, Zoo Atlanta's female Sumatran Tiger (and a dear friend of mine) is expecting her first litter! She and the zoo's male, Kavi, first met in 2007 but it was not until 2009 that Chelsea even became remotely interested. This will be the first Tiger birth since the surprise birth of Bahagia to the now deceased Jalal and Sekayu over ten years ago. Only found on the tiny island of Sumatra, there are fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers left out in the wild thanks to poaching and habitat loss. Zoo Atlanta actively participates in the Sumatran Tiger Species Survival Plan, a nationwide cooperate breeding program designed to help zoos sustain a genetically viable population within North America.

The press release has been posted on Zoo Atlanta's website.
